What size are these?
The Cometic MLX Head Gasket for Porsche 996 & 997.1 turbo are for 102mm up to 103.5mm bore sizes.
These are 0.040″ thick MLX style gaskets to slightly lower the compression ratio in higher boost applications.
What is MLX vs. MLS?
MLX is an upgraded version of the MLS. It uses an internal O-ring style crush ring close to the inner bore of the gasket. This raises the pressure on the gasket where it’s needed the most. It’s not a replacement for o-ringing heads, but definitely an improvement over the standard MLS. The reason they’re 0.040″ and up in thickness is to accomodate the extra o-ring and wrap around of the inner sealing surface which better protects the gasket at high power levels
Why can’t I use OEM head gaskets?
If you’re building your engine for high power you want to use the best head gaskets available. Cometic has made a tremendous name in racing and high powered street engines with their MLS and MLX Head gaskets.
If you’ve put in big head studs, you’ll be needing these. OEM head gaskets are about impossible to drill out and oversize. Save shop time and excessive labor by purchasing the correct head gaskets for your build.
Can I use these on a stock engine without big head studs?
Absolutely! Even with a stock engine build, these head gaskets are a nice upgrade for improved sealing over oem head gaskets.
how many do I need?
These are priced individually, so you’ll need 2 if you’re doing a full build, or only 1 if you’re doing a single bank repair.

I've worked with a bunch of mechanics, tuners, engine builders across multiple Porsches over multiple decades... and Todd has been the most helpful and knowledgeable of the bunch. And this has even been true while working with him remotely! (I'm in CA and he's in AR.) Just by looking at my logs and hearing about my engine rebuild, he's been able to diagnose stuff that in-person mechanics have not been able to. For example, Todd was the only person looking at my car to suggest a problem with a BRV could explain some of the weird behavior... following his advice, I dug in myself... lo and behold, torn BRV diaphragm on bank 1! Wow! Further, Todd has the most experience tuning these cars of any tuner I've worked with. Tune is absolutely solid and safe. Very very confident in his work!!! Absolute strongest possible recommendation!!

Adam McGregor2023-04-05I don’t think there is a better shop to shop entrust your Porsche to then Protomotive and the Knighton’s. Just search there name with 993 and you can start to get an idea of their storied history of building monster but reliable 911 Turbos! I have over 12 years and 30k miles (street, autox & track) on the Protomotive set up on my 997tt and it has never skipped a beat!
